it's against the law to be vaguely gay?
I'm having a New York City renaissance.

Ok, not quite (although I do want desperately to go home and then go into the city to enjoy all the Christmas upgrades NYC gets around this time), but I am having a Sports Night renaissance.

I watched the entire show about a year or two ago and loved it but never really got into the fandom aspect of it, for various reasons like: it was before I joined lj, it was right before I started my new semester and when I went back to school I quickly got swept into buying books etc, and, mostly, I assumed it was a dead fandom since the show's been off the air for a long time.

How silly of me.

I'm not sure exactly what started it but for the past, oh, three days or so I have done nothing but read old SN fics.  There's TONS of them -- and, god, they are all really good.  Every fandom has fantastic writers and maybe I stumbled on most of them, but I feel like everyone writing in the SN fandom just gets the characters and Sorkinese (which, hard!) and the feeling of the show.  I have a desire to now write SN but I probably won't because I know I'm even not half as good as those writers out there.  Most of the fics I'm reading are Dan/Casey -- the show makes it so easy to slash them and I'm not even a big slash fan but maybe that's another post -- but the gen ones are hysterical and adorable too.

I know I have some Sports Night fans on my flist - either passing interest or otherwise - so let's make this a Sports Night Love Post!  Tell me: what are your favorite episodes of the show?  lines from the show?  ships? and in fandom: who are your favorite authors?  favorite stories?  communities?   I feel like I've seen a good deal of stuff in the past few days but it was the type of thing where you read one story and then click another link and get lead somewhere else and felt like there was probably more on the other site that you missed but you just HAD to keep going ... you know?

Here are some of my favorite scenes, as clips on youtube (which obviously means I'm missing some favorites): Dan's apology from 1x02, which makes me cry every time; random classic Dan and Casey scene, which makes me feel warm inside every time; and where my subject line comes from featuring the woman who voices Lisa Simpson's voice, which semi-bothers me every time (as does the laugh track!).  But there are more.  Lots more.  :)

And for those that want to know even more about Sports Night, Dan, Casey, or Dan/Casey, check out this awesome explanation of it all at [info]ship_manifesto, which is another thing I stumbled on.

EDIT: following [info]morbidmuse's suggestion, I've made this post public so feel free to pimp it so we can all spread some Sports Night love!

Well, I watched the first disc of season 1 last week (that's all I've ever seen of it), and I must say I'm shipping Natalie and Jeremy!

And I love the interactions w/ Dan and Casey! I don't really get into fic that much, but those slash ones sound hilarious!

I can't really pick a favorite episode because I've only seen up to Thespis, but I really liked the pilot.

The pilot is still one of my favorites. Actually, who am I kidding? They're ALL my favorites :)

Natalie and Jeremy are adorable together too. Just the whole cast, really. Mmm, enjoy s2!!

you don't even have a pup tent
Oh, man, I haven't watched SN in ages. That set is, like, #1 on my list of dvds to buy, but it's NEVER on sale. Come on, Amazon!

God, I love The Six Southern Gentlemen of Tennessee, and Sally (oh, God, "you're wearing my shirt, Gordon" kills me every. single. time) and the one where Dana holds their pants hostage and the pilot and oh, boy, so much of that show is just solid win.

Let's see. 5 Things Sorkin Never Got to Steal from Sportscenter is one of my favorite SN fics. There's, like, 2 others saved in my del.icio.us, but that's only because my renaissance was before I started religiously bookmarking things I read.

Re: you don't even have a pup tent
Any links are good links in my book :) I looked up the DVDs online and they were $50 for both together which is not awful. I think Santa might be getting an addition to my list!

Six Southern Gentleman of TN is potentially my favorite of all time, although I really think every episode is my favorite.

If you're interested in other links for stories, some people have posted other links and I made this not FO so anyone can add to the Sports Night love!

Hey, sorry to impose on your comment as I don't know you. Just wanted to say from one Sports Night fan to another that I clicked the fic you linked and it was really good. I've already replied to the author but thanks for passing the fic along. :D

Aw, I'm glad you liked it! :)

Sports Night! Oh, man. I love this show. No exaggeration, I think it is probably my favorite show ever. I could watch it everyday. Which makes it really hard to pick a favorite episode/line/anything.

I love Six Southern Gentlemen of Tennessee Tech. I think Cut Man Cometh is hilarious. I love Dear Louise crazy large amounts. My, my, my, my, my Boogie Shoes! Oh man, Eli's Coming breaks my heart. I absolutely love What Kind of Day has it Been. I could keep going on, but I just love the show. I love the way it is hilarious and makes you feel for the characters and almost always ends with that warm feeling of hope. ♥

I don't really have a favorite quote, they are all so good. But the quote I used for my senior year quote was from Sports Night. It was from Hungry and the Hunted. It was "If you're dumb, surround yourself with smart people. If you're smart, surround yourself with smart people who disagree with you." It's also in this icon! And I introduced the show to the girls I live with and we (being dorks) have shirts with quotes. Mine says "if you're going to misuse a word, do it properly" because I'm an English major and the quote rocks. Patty's is of our favorite exchange. It's Dan and Casey from Quality of Mercy at 29K. "It's a vicious circle" "It just keeps going round and round" "It never ends" "That's what makes it vicious" "And a circle" SO FUNNY!

As far as ships go, I only really ship Jeremy/Natalie actively. But they are SO cute, how could you not?

There was a tiny period of time when I was interested in the fandom of Sports Night but it was only to read a little fic and it didn't even last very long. I've read Casey/Dan and enjoy it more than any other ship, but I still like the friendship aspect better. I think I also read a Dana/Natalie fic once upon a time but I honestly remember nothing about it so I don't know what that says about it. I've read maybe two Dana/Casey stories in my time and neither were good. :D Maybe they have too weird a relationship to make work in fic or maybe I was just looking in the wrong places.

I lost any fic links I would have saved from the time when I was interested in the SN fandom since it was awhile ago with my old computer. Of the newer stuff, have you seen the Putting the Sports back in Sports Night challenge fics? I liked Will Dunk For Brains (gen) and Grand Slam (Dan/Casey). I don't know if I read any of the others.

My favorite SN story that I remember and have the link to is actually for a SN crossover. Which is just awesome. It is Sports Night/West Wing, taking place after SN s2 and an AU ending to WW's s1. It has Donna/Josh and Donna/Danny, a really great crossover pairing. It's sort of angsty, but really good.

If this post weren't locked, I'd pimp it on my journal. The world could always use some more Sports Night lovin'. :D

Ok, best response ever? I love the idea of shirts with quotes on it because some of the exchanges and one liners in this show are just perfect but no one ever knows them when I say them!!

I'm not a big Dana/Casey fan mostly because I think the lead up would have been better than anything else. I'll definitly have to check out those links ... I hope the put sports back in SN challenge is run again because some of those stories are amazing and show-like!!

Aaaaand, I took your suggestion and made the post public because even if the show's been off the air for 7 years, that doesn't mean we can't celebrate it! So pimp! Pimp away!
amanda: [sports night] High Five[info]morbidmuse on November 30th, 2007 11:52 pm (UTC)
"he's my boy" "you're his boy?" "yeah, but it's alright"
Aw, thanks! My mom knew someone from from work who does shirts they actually look really nice. :D I gave one to my roommate and her's says, "You're five kinds of crazy, you know that?" and she loves it and wears it all the time. And the other girl we live with is on the crew team and she's a coxswain. So her shirt says "A coxswain?" "They're competitors just like everyone else" and the lines look really cool in how they intersect. But, um, I spelled coxswain wrong (it sounds like 'coxon' when you say it out loud!) so she only wears it to bed. :/

Dude, even with the shirts where it acknowledges Sports Night right under the quote people still don't get it. They laugh and they are funny and my misuse a word properly shirt goes quite a few comments on how great it is, but people haven't heard of the show. I only got two people that saw the shirt and recognized it. One said Sorkin is pretty good with West Wing but sucks at writing sports and the other was shocked people my age still know of the show. So... yeah.

Oh, I totally get that. By the time in the show they "broke up", I was so ready for Dana and Casey to end. Which is sad because they had never even been together and it is weird when you rewatch the start of the show to think that they never do. I don't know. Maybe I feel like sometime in the future, off camera when we never have to see, they get together. But I don't care to read it for the most part because it isn't as interesting to me. And having only read stories about them that I didn't like, it hasn't changed my mind.

Enjoy them! Yeah, it was a really cool challenge.

Sweet deal! Although, has it really been seven years already? I remember watching it on TV. With the last season switching times and days and stuff last minute and trying to keep up with it all. That seven years ago? Holy crap.

Consider it pimped! :D

It's been forever since I've watched Sports Night, and I STILL have not finished S2, but I love that show! One of the moments I remember loving in particular is the end of "Mary Pat Shelby" when Dan tells Natalie "this is what friends gear up for." MAJOR TEARS. And pretty much the whole of "Shoe Money Tonight", especially Jeremy's "you have three sevens, and I have a straight." As for ships, I really like Jeremy/Natalie and Dana/Casey (and I can see WHY people ship Dan/Casey, but I really like them more as BFF).
Jules: DanandCasy [ Sports Night ][info]blueeyelinerx on November 30th, 2007 09:43 pm (UTC)
Shoe Money Tonight rocks. I love that -- Jeremy's monologue, Dana, everything. Jeremy and Natalie are too cute and dorky together and Dan and Casey are perfect, either as BFF or as something more and lots of the fic I've loved has straddled that line. Ah, sports night.
you know what they say about me[info]faith21 on December 1st, 2007 12:00 am (UTC)
I LOVED Sports Night.

It's so long ago that I don't remember most of it, some things that come to mind are Natalie not 'acknowledging' the break, "if you scream into the mic when i'm wearing a headset, it poses the question - is there a decibel level at which point the human head will, you know, EXPLODE?"

and pretty much every quote from here - http://www.angelfire.com/pop2/hqp/sportsnight.html

Mmm, all those quotes make me want to watch every single episode ... which I think I will over Christmas break!!

awww...you made me remember how much I love that show! Now I need to add that to my xmas list.

I always loved Dan, he was my favorite!!!
Jules: DanandCasy [ Sports Night ][info]blueeyelinerx on December 1st, 2007 02:44 am (UTC)
I just added it to mine :) Dan was my favorite character too, even though I totally am in love with Peter Krause. So good for Josh Charles for making my allegiance sway!

Here from [info]morbidmuse's rec.

My FAVORITE Sports Night quote/moment will always be:

"October the Eighth, Nineteen Hundred and Ninety-Eight, A.D. ... A.D. They're worried I
might accidentally show up two-thousand years before the birth of Christ."

It kills me every. time.

I LOVE that one too!! I don't want to have to wait till Christmas for Santa to bring the DVDs ... I want to watch that episode now :)

So glad you stopped by! Feel free to spread the post to any other SN fans

Sports Night fic
The best place on LJ for Sports Night fic is [info]snarchive - most of the people writing nowadays post links to their fic there. And it's being recced on [info]crack_van this month, too.
